If you look at any ship that can make an ASW (antisubmarine warfare) attack, an ASW weapon will appear on the ship card (typically in the rear for ships with DC racks, and possibly in another arc as well for ships that had DC projectors). In that weapon entry on the card will be the range in CM. Planes do not have ranges for weapons, and would set up an attack run as with any other weapon. With a ship, the search would work like this: If the submarine's die that represents it's possible location is within the number on the marker * the move distance of the sub + the DC range of the ship. As an example, an RN K-Class destroyer with an ASW range of 10 is looking for a possible German Type VIIc, whose contact marker is showing 3 . If the marker is within 10 (DC range) + (3[marker number] *5 [a movement distance]) [10+ (3*5) =25 cm) then the destroyer in question can search for the sub. If successful, the number on the marker is reduced by one, and the subs owner may move the marker one movement distance, which is 5CM. If the number on the marker would go below one, the sub is revealed and ASW attacks can be made. At least that's my understanding, but if I'm wrong I'd love clarification.
With a plane, I honestly have no idea how an ASW search would work, unless the flight simply parks above the marker and resolves a search. It would be nice to have some language that addresses that point specifically though.

Thank you very much for your answer. It's clearer for me. With the plane i don't understand how the search works. I believe that it would be a good idea to do a schema like page 12 for determining speed and heading.

I have another question about submarine: on the data card "submerged movement 5" means the sub move of 5 cm in the hidden movement ?
it's difficult to know if the rule speak about distance or speed. I suppose that's the number 5 on the data card means 5 cm but i would like to be sure
Some examples will be welcomed
thanks
Richard

Hello Richard,
I've just returned from my vacation so I will try to catch up with all the activity of the past weeks (yey!).
- An aircraft needs to be next to the submerged marker to make a search, this is the most logical from a gameplay perspective. I'll add it to 1.5 when I get the chance.
- Submerged movement is indeed the distance in Cm. I'll also make a clarification for it in the rulebook.
Thank you for your feedback!

thank you very much for your answer. I hope that your vacation was great. I know that it's difficult to answer regularly to the naval war players but thanks for your time
if i can suggest some changes, it will be very useful to have examples and schemas in the next version. I printed all the data cards to play with the 1.4 versio and i hope that i could always use them in the 1.5 version
I would like to adapt your rule to the russo japanese 1904 war and i could make the data card with a matrix. Do you think that it's possible ?
thanks again for this great rule.
My wife can play with me now ...

Except for the correction of typo's I don't think the data cards have really changed for version 1.5, so you should be fine. The only big change concerning the data cards is the removal of 'scout' as a special ability.
The officer cards did see some changes, as I needed to facilitate the tactical orders on the cards. Still, there are a lot less officer cards then there are ship and airplane cards
I use an excel database to generate my cards, so in theory it would be possible to use it as a template and convert it to the russo-japanese war. I've also had multiple requests to do WW1. Still, I'm only one person and there is only a limited time available to me to develop the game as a hobby. Furthermore my expertise is WW2, so I currently focus on improving the game as it is (sorry!).

After reading the Submarine rules, I still dont understand how the subs work. If the sub has a marker of 3, for example, does the player secretly mark down where the sub is withing that 15cm circle?

Hello Shipwreck68 (welcome to the forum)
If the marker is on 3, the sub can be anywhere within a 15cm radius of the marker. No need to write it down. It can appear anywhere you want within the radius.
